Lionel Messi was born in Rosario city on June 24, 1987. At the age of five, he started playing football for Grandoli, a club coached by his father. In 1995, Messi switched to Newell's Old Boys. At the age of 11, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency. River Plate showed interest in Messi's progress, but did not have enough money to pay for the treatment of the illness that cost over £500 a month. Carles Rexach, the sporting director of FC Barcelona, was made aware of Messi's talent, and Barcelona signed him after watching him play, offering to pay for the medical bills if he was willing to move to start a new life in Spain. On August 4, 2005, José Pekerman called Messi up to the senior Argentine national team. He made his debut on August 17, 2005 against Hungary, but it was a forgettable occasion. He was substituted on during the 63rd minute, but was sent off after just 40 seconds, because the referee, Markus Merk, found he had elbowed defender Vilmos Vanczák, who was tugging Messi's shirt, and left the pitch in tears. The decision was contentious. Maradona even claimed the decision was pre-meditated. Copa America 2007
Messi played his first game in Copa America on 29 June, 2007, when Argentina defeated United States 4-1 in the first game. In this game, Messi showed his capabilities as a playmaker. He set up a goal for fellow striker Hernán Crespo and had numerous shots on target. Tevez came on as a substitute for Messi in the 79th minute and scored minutes later.
His second game was against Colombia, in which he caused a penalty that Crespo converted to tie the game at 1-1. He also played part in Argentina's second goal as he was fouled outside the box, which allowed Juan Roman Riquelme to score from a freekick, and increase Argentina's lead to 3-1. The final score of the game was 4-2 in Argentina's favor and guaranteed them a spot in the tournament's quarterfinals.
In the third game, against Paraguay the coach rested Messi having already qualified for the quarter-finals. He came off the bench in place of Esteban Cambiasso in the 64th minute, with 0-0. In the 79th minute he created a goal for Javier Mascherano. In the quarterfinals, as Argentina faced Peru, Riquelme made a pass to Messi and the latter scored the second goal for Argentina, which advanced to the semifinals after a 4-0 win.
In the semi finals against Mexico, Messi scored when he spotted the Mexican goalkeeper Oswaldo Sanchez off of his line and chipped the ball into the goal. The goal ultimately helped his team to a 3-0 victory and earned them a place in the final against Brazil, which Argentina subsequently lost 3-0.

Lionel Messi of FC Barcelona and Argentina has won the inaugural FIFA Ballon d'Or award for the best player of 2010.

This sees the Argentine retain the award for the footballer of the year: last year he was the undisputed winner of the FIFA World Player of the Year award and the Ballon d'Or prize, which have this year merged into one single title.

Messi thus becomes one of a rare few to win the award twice in a row, beating club teammates Xavi and Andres Iniesta, both of Spain, in the process. He obtained 22.65 per cent of the votes, overcoming Iniesta's 17.36 per cent and Xavi's 16.48 per cent.

FIFA's voting panel judged Messi to be the best due to his astounding club form. In La Liga, Messi has spent the last twelve months scoring a goal a game. In those matches that he didn't score he often turned provider: in the 5-0 rout of Real Madrid, Messi set up two of the strikes for his teammates.

A disappointing World Cup for Argentina could have hampered Messi's chances - in World Cup years, it is often players from the winning team that win the Ballon d'Or. This year seems to be an exception to the rule.

Xavi, meanwhile, missed out despite a year in which he provided the most assists of all, and had a passing rate the likes of which is seldom seen. Andres Iniesta, another key assister who also scored the winning goal in the World Cup final, perhaps failed to win due to missing much of the year with injury.

Second In A Row
Barcelona failed to win the Champions League in 2009-10, but this did not cost Messi due to his tremendous individual showings throughout the tournament.

He was the top scorer in Europe's premier club competition despite not reaching the final, with four of his eight tournament goals coming in one glorious performance against Arsenal in the quarter-finals.

His prowess in front of goal was no less in La Liga. En route to winning the La Liga Player of the Year award for the second time in a row, Messi became his club's and in fact the whole league's top goalscorer, netting 34 goals in 35 appearances. This also brought him the European Golden Shoe award for top continental striker.

Needless to say, he was also named Argentine Footballer of the Year for the fifth time in six years.

Against The Grain?
Not everyone agreed with FIFA's decision that Messi should win. In a Goal.com poll run in the days leading up to the announcement, a majority tipped Xavi to win the award, with the Argentine in second and Iniesta a distant third.

NEW YORK: Rafael Nadal must overturn a five-match losing streak against Novak Djokovic this year if he is to successfully defend his US Open title and clinch an 11th career Grand Slam title.

Nadal confronts the toughest challenge in men's tennis on Monday when he tries to derail the red-hot Serb's campaign to add a first US Open to the Australian Open and Wimbledon titles he has already captured in his landmark year.

It's been a season which has seen Djokovic win 63 of his 65 matches, take Nadal's world number one spot, collect two of the three majors so far played and secure five of six Masters.

Nadal has suffered most at the hands of Djokovic, losing in the finals of Indian Wells, Miami, Rome, Madrid and Wimbledon.

But the Spaniard, who became the youngest man to complete a career Grand Slam when he won a first US Open crown 12 months ago, believes his major battle will be convincing himself he can triumph on Monday.

"I am not very happy about my mental performance against him this year because for moments I didn't believe really 100 percent in victory," said Nadal, who will be playing in his 14th Grand Slam final.

"That's the big problem. Because when that's happening, you have fewer chances than if you believe. If you believe, you are running more and you are putting one more ball inside. So that's what I'm going try to change for Monday."

Nadal reached the final with a bruising 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over British fourth seed Andy Murray while Djokovic made it to his sixth career Grand Slam final, with a 6-7 (7/9), 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 7-5 win over five-time champion Roger Federer.

In a repeat of his semi-final heroics of 2010, the Serb once again saved two match points to beat Federer.

Nadal said he is ready to slug it out with Djokovic who could be forgiven for thinking the tennis gods are on his side this year when he unleashed an outrageous forehand return to save the first of those points.

But he will need to unleash a relentless barrage.

"I have to do it not one time. I have to do it 1000 times during the match. That's what I really have to do, and that's what I'm going to try," he said.

Despite his procession of defeats against Djokovic in 2011, Nadal still holds the upper hand with a 16-12 winning record.

The Serb is riding a wave of confidence into the final which will be the fourth successive year the men's title match has been pushed back to Monday because of heavy rain washing away large parts of the schedule.

"This is the best year of my career, by far. The confidence level that is very high at this moment for me helps me to get into these big matches and go for the shots that I maybe in some situations wouldn't," said Djokovic.

"But it's all a process of learning and getting experience and maturing as a player, as a person."

Despite his great escape against Federer, the top seed believes there is little he needs to tweak ahead of Monday's eagerly-awaited showdown, a repeat of the 2010 final and this year's Wimbledon final.

"Just try to play my game," is the Serb's philosophy. "I know that I have a game that is good enough to win against him. I proved that this year on three different surfaces.

"I need to go out on the court believing I can win. But we're talking about a player who has won 10 majors already in his career and he's only 25. It's going to be a tough match."

About an hour before the most star-studded summer league game tipped off at Morgan State’s Hill Field House, I spotted Goodman League commissioner and master of ceremony for the night, Miles Rawls, and asked him about when his team was going to have a rematch against the Drew League in Los Angeles. Rawls again mentioned that they are looking at getting together on Sept. 25, but added that the Drew League is still trying to get Kobe Bryant involved in some way. “K.D. wants Kobe, doesn’t he,” I asked Rawls, since District native Kevin Durant had already told Brandon Jennings the night before on Twitter that he wanted to see Bryant playing for the Drew League the next time the teams square off.
Rawls nodded and said, “You know K.D. ain’t ducking nobody.”
Rawls words would prove to be on point later in the evening, as the late-arriving Durant eagerly accepted the challenge of being the lone all-star for the Goodman League against the all-star trio of LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul that led the Melo League.
“Playing against those guys was a lot of fun for me. I’m excited I got that opportunity playing against some great players, playing with some great players as well,” Durant said after his team lost, 149-141, in a game that was lopsided until the final five minutes.
Durant was aided by NBA players Jeff Green, Trevor Austin Daye, Roger Mason Jr., and Jarrett Jack, but the matchup against the Melo All-Stars was incredibly unfair -- especially with DeMarcus Cousins and Jennings failing to appear, for some reason, placing more pressure on Durant. The Melo all-stars also had the high-flying Eric Bledsoe and Josh Selby, and the sharp-shooting Gary Neal to carry the load when the Big Three wasn’t lighting up the scoreboard.
Durant scored 59 points, but for most of the night, it felt like watching the Eastern Conference Finals, when James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh combined to make Derrick Rose resemble a helpless one-way show. Rawls mentioned during the third quarter that Durant was “doing everything but cleaning the floor” but he couldn’t outscore James, Paul and Anthony all alone.

Early on, Paul, Anthony and James took turns guarding Durant, until James decided to take on the lockout champ by himself. And, that’s when the game got interesting, when the talent disparity was overshadowed by a duel that most fans would never get treated to if the duo was playing an NBA game in Oklahoma City or Miami. Though it might be a matchup that we see in the NBA Finals someday – whenever the league comes back.
No coach would’ve allowed them to take the ball up and go at each other with step-back jumpers, stutter steps and crossover dribbles. That’s the beauty of these summer league pick-up games, because players can defend their reputations and display their pride each possession, with fans goading them every step of the way. James and Durant definitely got caught up, making those $40 tickets – $100 for floor seats – worth the price of admission.

“There’s nothing like it,” Anthony said of pickup basketball. “This summer, summer basketball is back. L.A., Chicago, New York, D.C., Baltimore. It’s back and I think we did a great job of competing for the fans.”

James didn’t speak with reporters after the game, waiting for Paul to answer questions before he snuck out of the gym, surrounded by four police officers.
But the Durant-James battle really got started when James hit a pull-up jumper, then a turnaround jumper over Durant. James, who finished with 38 points, then caught a sick alley-oop from Josh Selby, tipping the ball to a more ideal spot before dunking with both hands. Durant quickly responded by dunking over Anthony and getting fouled. He later completed a baseline drive and dunk around James, stared down James and did a little shimmy before knocking down a three-pointer over him.
“To have that type of opportunity to play against him, and just work on what I’ve been working on all summer, it’s was fun,” Durant said of James. “He’s a great defender, great scorer. I played my hardest on the defensive end against him. I tried to play as best as I can on the offensive end.”
Fans wanted James to respond directly at Durant, but many of his points came from getting out on the fast break and dunking. Durant hit a three-pointer over James, then blocked James’s shot before James drove inside for a layup. When Rawls mentioned that Durant was giving James the business after one jumper, James was already running down the floor to throw a bounce pass off the backboard — to himself, for a dunk.
Durant lost the game, but continued to add to his burgeoning street ball reputation, after earlier scoring 66 points at Rucker Park, then having 44 in the Goodman League’s win over the Drew League on Aug. 20. His cross-country exploits have caught the attention of players all over the league. “Durant’s gone on a rampage this summer,” Anthony said. “I told him to ‘Slow down.’ Because every other night I see him in a different city playing. But that’s just the love of the game that he’s got, and I respect that. I’m glad he actually showed up and played in this game, too.”
“We’ve been following KD all summer, going to all these games,” Paul said.
Durant’s summer-league tour hasn’t just been the equivalent of a grassroots marketing tool, it has been a way for him to get better. His improved ball-handling was evident throughout Tuesday’s game. He consistently used his crossover to get by defenders, or to create separation for him to drop his jumper. He might have to wait for Russell Westbrook to find him in his comfortable spots, or settle for long-range shots, as he often did in the Western Conference Finals against Dallas.
Durant doesn’t believe that he has done anything special this summer, with the attention coming only because the NBA lockout will likely result in the upcoming season getting started late, if at all. “People have blown it out of proportion,” Durant said, “but guys always been playing summer leagues, been playing pickup games every summer. I’ve been doing this ever since I’ve been in the league.”
But now Durant is a two-time all-star, a two-scoring champion, and what he does is relevant. And his desire to play, wherever and whenever somebody wants to get a good run has raised his profile even more. And, nearly scoring 60 with a first-team all-defensive player in front of him doesn’t hurt either. “Whenever there’s a big game, I’m ready to play,” Durant said.

But unlike in her routine win Thursday, Jankovic’s poor execution Saturday rendered that plan irrelevant. She lost in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
Showing none of the form that took her to the final in Cincinnati two weeks ago, Jankovic had trouble keeping the ball in the court on even the most routine shots against the normally more erratic Pavlyuchenkova. Jankovic, the 2008 U.S. Open runner-up, sprayed 35 unforced errors to only 13 winners. More than half (35 of 65) of the points Pavlyuchenkova won were off Jankovic’s unforced errors.
On match point, Pavlyuchenkova hit a first serve that registered at only 71 miles per hour. Jankovic promptly shanked her forehand return wide of the doubles alley. The pair, who have played doubles together several times earlier this year, greeted each other warmly at the net. After the two chatted for a bit, Jankovic let Pavlyuchenkova shake the chair umpire’s hand first, then, apparently absentmindedly, forgot to shake the official’s hand herself, her carelessness on Louis Armstrong Stadium extending beyond the final point.

Vera Zvonareva, the No. 2 seed in the women’s draw at the United States Open, will be talking with Straight Sets about her experiences throughout the tournament. On Thursday afternoon, she spoke about her second-round match on Wednesday against Kateryna Bondarenko of Ukraine, which Zvonareva won 7-5, 3-6, 6-3. Zvonareva was an emotional presence in a hard-fought match, and at times was clearly unhappy with her racket. Here, her account of the match:

Nothing really was bothering me–it was a tough match. Emotions are part of the sport — you win a point and pump yourself up and you lose a point and you can use your anger to pump yourself then too.
Broken strings are something you don’t expect. That was weird; I practiced the whole week last week and didn’t have any problems. If the humidity drops, it gets dry and the strings get dry and break. I really like the strings I was playing with but I cannot accept when strings break–it will cost me points and maybe a match. During the tournament it is really impossible to change strings, but it is something we will look into after this is over.
I have known Kateryna for years and the last time I played her, six or seven years ago, it was a tough match. She is very dangerous and I expected a tough match. I was a little upset that I let her get back into the match during the second set–I had to start over again in the third set. That is something I should not allow myself to do in upcoming matches.
It takes me time to get used to my opponent. Once I figured it out I could come up with the right shots. It took me a little longer; she hits a clean backhand pretty flat and she is a good mover on the court. As the match went on I started doing everything more consistent, I was able to be a little more precise.
I had a nice practice session this morning–regular stuff–and an autograph session, and then I’ll have a lazy afternoon–that’s the best preparation.
On Monday afternoon, Zvonareva spoke about her match earlier that day vs. Stephanie Foretz Gacon, which Zvonareva dominated 6-3, 6-0:
It is never easy. It always looks easier from the side. I think the level of tennis is very high at the moment and there are no easy opponents. The whole draw is packed with players who are tough.

You have to fight for every point; if you lose your concentration you lose the match. I think I did well with all of the conditions there are to deal with. It is always tough to play the first match of a tournament. Each city has different courts, different surfaces, different balls — you always have to make adjustments, You cannot play the same way at every tournament. You have to adjust your style.
And no matter how much you practice you always feel a little rusty in your first match of a tournament. Your decisions are not as quick; maybe the game is not as precise as you wish it to be. It can create more unforced errors, and that’s always difficult. But once you have that first match you really feel better. You know what to expect from the court, the weather, all those conditions.
I just played my game today against Stephanie. I had some unforced errors but when I needed it I came up with some good shots. I was always putting pressure on and fighting for every point and she couldn’t find her rhythm. If I do let her find her rhythm it could be a different match — if you always apply pressure your opponent never knows what to expect from you and that makes it difficult for them.
I try to use my challenges like I did today — sometimes I know my ball was out but I just want to check how long it is. When you have long matches you try to save challenges for the important moments. If I feel like I am losing my focus I can challenge to take my time to refocus.

After a slow start, Zvonareva reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open and then went on to make it to the last four at Pattaya city. She then continued the same form to win titles at Doha and Baku along with a recent final performance at Carlsbad last month. She beat Foretz Stephanie in the first round and then cracked a win against Kateryna Bondarenko in drilling three set match-up to set up a third set encounter against Medina Garrigues at this year’s US Open.

Medina Garrigues had a weak start as she was popping out early at almost all tournaments she played. But then she found form in July when she got to the semi-final in Budapest and won a title at Palermo. The Spaniard later reached the quarterfinals at New Haven too. She beat Karin Knapp in the first round and then went past Laura Robson to set up a clash with the world number two in the third round.

Both the players have met four times before and the head-to-head stands at 3-1 in Zvonareva’s favour. The last time they met was in 2008 in Zurich where Zvonarena walked through the match in the middle of the second set. Zvonareva is armed with commendable foot-work and can shoot aggressive forehands from any part of the court. Medina Garrigues can craft tactical rallies and can work sharp angled ground strokes. Zvonareva should be able to come through in two tight sets.

World No. 10 Nicolas Almagro of Spain has suffered a surprise first round loss today against France’s Julien Benneteau.
Almagro considered to be one of the clay-court kings of the game lost in straight sets 2-6 4-6 3-6 in just over two hours. The Spanish player hit 38 winners and slammed down 12 aces today on Court 17 but it wasn’t enough to stop the French wildcard.
The No. 81^st ranked Benneteau lost in the final of the Winston Salem Open last week to John Isner. The Frechman had to qualify and win three rounds to get a spot in the main draw. On his way to the final last week he overcame Igor Kunitsyn, Igor Andreev, Sergiy Stakhovsky and Robin Hasse.

Today’s match was mainly played from the baseline. Benneteau benefitted from serving well today and took a 5-2 lead in the first set and closed the set out 6-2. In the second set the Spaniard ended up 0-4 down in no time. Almagro came back to 4-3 but Benneteau played well and won the second set 6-4. The third set was quick and Benneteau took the set and the match in straight sets.
Julien Benneteau’s second round opponent is Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan, who took out American hopeful Ryan Sweeting in four sets.

Two-time defending US Open champion Kim Clijsters of Belgium won’t be attempting to win the hardcourt Slam title for the third straight year as she announced her withdrawal from the event due to stomach muscle injury.
In a statement released on Friday, the four-time Grand Slam winner said that “two weeks of rehabilitation is not enough to heal” the injury which she sustained at the Rogers Cup earlier this month.
Clijsters won the Australian Open this year. However, she posted less than stellar results in the other Slam events – she made it only to Roland Garros second round and pulled out of Wimbledon.

An in-form Caroline Wozniacki has loosened up to the point where she is now publicly discussing her romantic relationship with pro golfer Rory McIIroy.
It's easier to sit casually back and discuss one’s personal life when you’re playing well, and No. 1 Wozniacki played a clean and forceful match in her 6-2, 6-0 wipeout of fellow 20-year-old Arantxa Rus in the second round.

Wozniacki did not belt numerous winners, but she forced a ton of them and put up a wall behind the baseline. She knew that if she kept her balls deep and could change direction that her foe would err more times than not, and she was spot on in her analysis.

“It was a good match today,” said Wozniacki, who will face American Vania King in the next round. “I'm happy that it turned out the way it did. I felt like I was playing good. I really enjoy playing out there on Arthur Ashe night sessions. It's a great feeling.”

After her quick win over Michaella Krajicek, Serena Williams mentioned that she and Venus had given relationship advice to Wozniacki in the locker room. Over the past two years, Serena has made pals of younger players such as Wozniacki and Victoria Azarenka. She herself has dated other celebrities including the American rapper Common. Serena said that she gave Wozniacki bad advice, which was to never look through your boyfriends’ cell phone and that relationships end.

“We were all in the locker room,” Wozniacki said. “I was going to get some treatment. She was sitting there with Venus and talking. And then it just came out that we were talking a bit and we had a laugh…. I think I should not listen to her or Venus. She was not better.”

Wozniacki and McIlroy have talked about the fact that one of the things that makes their relationship work is because they are both athletes around the same age who understand what the other one is going through. She does not think that they will distract each other.

“I think we have our limits and we know where they are,” she said. “So as long as we both keep the feet on the ground and we both have our careers, which are important to us, I think it's working well.”

Wozniacki is hoping that her plans for a resurgence will go well too. Since winning Indian Wells in March, she suffered a series of stinging defeats at big events and lost early both at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. When she returned to play on North American hard courts in early August, she lost both her opening matches. Somehow, she managed to right her ship in New Haven and won her fourth straight title there. She did not defeat a Grand Slam level field there, but did take out former French Open champion Francesca Schiavone and the red hot Czech Petra Cetkovska, two critical wins for her confidence.

“I won New Haven. Now I won two matches here,” she said. “I feel like I'm on a roll and I'm playing well…. I believe I can beat anyone on a good day. But I have to play on a high level for seven matches, and that's not easy.”

Li Na has gone from a steely competitor to a forlorn figure in the short space of less than three months. After winning her first major at Roland Garros, it seemed that Na was ready to carry that momentum into the U.S. Open but fell to pieces before our eyes on Tuesday.

Na committed 54 unforced errors and looked exasperated as she struggled against 53rd ranked Simona Halep. The young Romanian pushed out Na in straight sets (6-2, 7-5.) Once again, Na exited the U.S. Open in the opening round for the second year in a row.

If it seemed like Na was imploding in the court, that was nothing compared to her post-match press conference where she let fly an expletive. Clearly, she was feeling a strong mix of frustration, disappointment and helplessness. “Now I even lose all the confidence on the court,” she said. “I was feeling, ‘Oh, tennis is just too tough for me. French Open is like three months (ago) already.”

It’s astounding to see how quickly Na fell from the perch of French Open champion to a first round loss at the U.S. Open. As her quotes suggest, she’s clearly a confidence player. Na fed off her confidence to reach the Australian Open Final and reign supreme at Roland Garros but her lack of it at Flushing Meadows led to her downfall.

Na was expected to go far this time around at the U.S. Open. The competitive spirit that helped her defeat Caroline Wozniacki at the Australian Open and Maria Sharapova at the French Open quickly evaporated when things weren’t going her way against Halep.

Tuesday’s shock exit proves that big stage events like the U.S. Open require as much mental strength as it does physical ability. Na was her own worst enemy and can only blame herself for not advancing into the second round.

Is John Cena’s Wrestling Ability Overlooked?

In the history of the WWE is it possible to find a Superstar who splits the audience more so than ‘the champ’ John Cena? It would be hard to imagine any wrestler that gets such reactions and gets such emotion out of the live event crowds – both in positives and negatives. He’s in a unique position of where a section of the audience give him support no matter what and love him, his ‘CeNation’, the people who regularly chant “Let’s Go Cena!” every Monday Night on RAW, and Sunday on a pay-per-view.

While on the other side there is the section of fans that have a hate for Cena that runs to their spine, and chant “Cena Sucks!”, as well as “ You Can’t Wrestle”. Most of these fans are those that go on the internet and know the ins and outs of the wrestling world, the “smart” fans. Really though, are these fans smart? Is John Cena a bad wrestler?

Around a week ago, Mick Foley made various tweets about John Cena, giving his support to his talent. Foley said on Twitter that Cena is a workhouse and that he “hasn’t been in a bad PPV (that I’ve seen) in a long time. He CAN wrestle!” I think it would be hard to find truer words on the Twitter world. Praising the wrestling ability of Cena is probably a controversial one, especially on the internet, where a bunch of misinformed angry people are just waiting to jump at you for having a varying opinion. Look at the archive of pay-per-view matches from the year 2005 onwards, where Cena was given true opportunities to showcase what he can do in the ring, and he has had a endless list of fantastic matches, it would be extremely hard to find an awful match on pay-per-view.

This past July he featured in a match rated five stars by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter with CM Punk, the first match in the WWE to be granted such rating since the original (and in my opinion best) Hell in a Cell match between Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker in 1997. Now, depending on how important you think the view of one man is in determining the rating of a match, you still have to see it as some importance considering the amount of matches and wrestlers that haven’t been given a five star match. Although the main star behind the storyline was CM Punk, John Cena played an important role, on the microphone with story telling as well as holding his own in the ring, matching Punk hold-for-hold.

I’d assume that some people might still be negative with everything that Cena does and claim that he got lucky. After all of those main event matches, with all of those great wrestlers one was due to strike gold sooner or later like the monkey/typewriter/shakespeare theory. That he came across CM Punk at a high point in his career, that if anyone else had been in the match it would have been just as good – five star worthy, that Cena was “carried”.

Time after time, month after month his matches have struck gold, against an all star list of wrestlers, of different styles and different attitudes. Shawn Michaels, Chris Jericho, Triple H, Batista, Randy Orton, of course CM Punk and even Bobby Lashley during his rather short lived and ill fated term in the World Wrestling Entertainment. The list could go on, and it ranges a number of years, from 2005 to 2011, six years of solid to great matches each month, how many other people could make such a claim – only the best, the Bret Hart’s, the Steve Austin’s of the wrestling world. And Cena matches up with the best in number of matches with true quality. It would be rare for someone to put Cena in a category with such names.

Possibly because he isn’t technically a great wrestler, but were Stone Cold Steve Austin, or The Rock? No – but both were universally loved. Although Austin was a notably good wrestler during his day, before his neck and knee injuries took their toll, even during the Austin 3:16 era he still was able to put on great matches. While The Rock was mostly known for his charisma, while in the ring he wasn’t fantastic, he wasn’t awful too. Maybe its because because once Rocky hit the big time in 1998 he was a heel and then turned face sometime during ’99 and then leaving in ’02, before turning heel again in ’03 briefly. Maybe its possible that The Rock left for the Hollywood red carpet before the fans could turn against him. Austin on the other hand was around long enough for that to happen but his character had all around appeal being the anti-hero, the badass that hated his boss and did everything his own way. While Cena is the opposite, he isn’t the anti-hero, he’s the good guy, he’s happy he has his fans and loves them.

Internet readings indicate that Cena is a genuinely nice guy. WWE’s website reported back in April that he had granted his 200th Make-A-Wish Foundation wish, something that he obviously enjoys doing. For these children, Cena is their hero and he knows this, if he was to turn into a heel, a bad guy these children wouldn’t have a hero, he wouldn’t be able to do any work with the Make-A-Wish Foundation, this is something that has to be taken into account when people want Cena to change his character, he enjoys being the hero. Even these past two weeks on RAW, there has been some character development to his always happy character, a much more serious tone – which has been interesting and a change. Yet the internet still have a negative attitude towards Cena, despite the change.

It could be his moveset, his well known “five moves of doom”. The internet likes to complain at his moveset, his signature moves are the only ones he knows. Yet every single wrestler has a signature move set, all the biggest names Hogan, Michaels, Undertaker – they all use a set of moves to finish the match off in a lot of cases. It might be one move in particular, the Five Knuckle Shuffle, possibly it looks too stupid or fake. Is it any different from the People’s Elbow? The similarities between the two are endless, the only difference is an elbow pad is thrown into the crowd and the difference between an elbow and a fist drop. The Rock was never given huge amounts of hate because of this, Cena should be no different.

The Rock himself said via his Facebook that Cena’s fans were nothing but women and children, that any man would know Cena isn’t real, that men can see through his “bullshit”. This isn’t completely true, while the majority of Cena’s fanbase is arguably the demographics which Rocky described, if you scan through the crowds on RAW and at live events, you will see an amount of men wearing his t-shirts and cheering him. It could be Cena be that Rock is trying to appeal to the fans that love to hate Cena with his videos and tweets, as it seems that being anti-Cena is a cool thing now and has been since 2005, for some unknown reason.

I’m not a super fan of John Cena, I don’t have a red t-shirt of his, or a purple, not even orange – I don’t own one of his DVDs, or follow him on Twitter (and that’s free!) But I can respect him for the amount of work he puts in and I can respect that he can put on a number of good matches. In the future once Cena hangs up the shorts and the Jordans and retires from the ring, maybe all the fans will recognise just how good he is.

MONTE CARLO, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Lionel Messi scored one goal and created another as Champions League winners Barcelona lifted the European Super Cup on Friday after a 2-0 victory over Porto who finished with nine men.

An awful back pass by Colombia midfielder Fredy Guarin was intercepted by Messi and the Argentine slotted the ball in after sidestepping keeper Helton on 39 minutes.

Europa League winners Porto fell further behind when Messi chipped a pass for substitute Cesc Fabregas to control the ball with his chest and fire in with two minutes left.

Rolando was sent off after 86 minutes before Porto team mate Guarin received another red card four minutes later.

With his chiseled good looks, Super Bowl trophies and supermodel wife, the New England Patriots quarterback sure seems to have hit the genetic jackpot. According to one report, though, Brady is facing the same struggle as millions of ordinary Joes.

Hair loss.

The National Enquirer reported that Brady's car was spotted outside Leonard Hair Transplant Associates in Cranston, R.I., on Nov. 9. That would be the office of Dr. Robert Leonard, described on his website as "New England's foremost authority on hair restoration."

"Guys just don't want to be bald," said Dr. Raymond Konior of Premiere Hair Restoration in Chicago. "Great heads of hair are perceived as being stronger people, better-looking people."

Leonard's office wouldn't confirm if Brady was a patient, saying in a statement that, to protect patients' privacy, "We don't comment on, confirm, deny or otherwise discuss matters related to our client list." But if Brady is having hair restoration, Konior said it's highly unlikely he's doing it with five weeks left in the regular season and the playoffs looming.

A call to Brady's agent, Don Yee, wasn't immediately returned.

Hair restoration is a surgical procedure and, like any other, requires recovery time. While it varies by procedure and patient, it's usually at least a week.

Procedures can last anywhere from four to 14 hours, depending on how much hair is being moved, and can cost between $5,000 and $18,000.

David Beckham was born in London, but great up with a love of Man United that he had inherited from his parents, both fanatical supporters of the Red Devils. Although living in London, he was involved with the club, participating in training camps, soccer schools, and as a mascot. David started the next campaign, 1996/97, by scoring his most famous goal - from the halfway line against Wimbledon at Selhurst Park. He went on to earn his first senior cap for England, on 1 September 1996 against Moldova in Kishinev. He had previously been capped at youth and Under-21 level. David's match-winning performances during 1996/97 helped United to win another Premiership title and reach the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League. On a personal level, he was voted Young Player of the Year and second in the overall Player of the Year poll.

The 1997/98 season was a disappointing one for United as they finished second to Arsenal in the League, lost to Barnsley in the FA Cup and were knocked out of the Champions League quarter-finals by Monaco. There was some consolation for David, though, when he was selected for England's World Cup Finals squad.

The 1998 World Cup Finals provided mixed feelings for David, and were later seen as something of a turning point in his career. After being left out of the starting line-up for the first two matches, he then scored a stunning free-kick for England against Colombia and was hailed a national hero. He was later branded a villain, however, when he was sent off for a foul on Diego Simeone as England were knocked out in the second round by Argentina. It was the first red card of David's career. Some experts predicted that his World Cup problems could lead to David's exit from English football, but he knuckled down to prove them all wrong. In the first League game of the 1998/99 season against Leicester City, he curled in one of his trademark free-kicks to prevent defeat.

In March 1999 he became a father to Brooklyn, whose name appeared on his boots when United completed the unprecedented Treble of Premiership, FA Cup and European Cup. In July 1999, David married Victoria Adams, better known as 'Posh', a member of the Spice Girls pop group.

The 1999/2000 season was another successful one for David, despite all the press hype caused by a new haircut and a high-profile argument with Sir Alex Ferguson. The midfielder picked up his fourth Premiership winner's medal, and was voted second best player in Europe and the World. Rivaldo of Barcelona and Brazil pipped him to both awards. David also finished runner-up in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year, losing out to boxing champion Lennox Lewis.

The major highlights of David's 2000/01 season were on the international stage, although he again won the Premiership title with United, having scored in three matches in a row early in the campaign.

David proudly captained England for the first time in a friendly in Italy and then kept the armband for the friendly with Spain and the World Cup qualifiers against Albania and Finland, against whom he scored an important goal at Anfield, home of Liverpool FC.

He saved the most important goal for Old Trafford, however, and his last-gasp goal against Greece in October 2001 secured England's place at the World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea. After breaking a metatarsal bone in his left foot against Deportivo la Coruna, the nation waited to see if the inspirational captain would be fit to lead Sven's men in the Far East.

In the end, he recovered but was not fully fit as England drew 1-1 with Sweden before Becks' penalty beat pre-tournament favourites Argentina. A 0-0 draw with Nigeria took David and the lads through to the second round where a comprehensive 3-0 win over Denmark set up a quarter-final against Brazil. The Samba Kings was a step too far for England, however, and they lost 2-1 before coming home to a heroes' welcome. What a difference four years makes.

The 2002/03 season again saw Beckham make headlines both on and off the pitch. He found the net eleven times in total - but only once in the Premiership, on the last day of the season at Goodison Park. A stray boot, kicked in frustration by Sir Alex Ferguson, accidentally struck Becks on the forehead in the dressing room and ensured more tabloid coverage for the England captain. That was nothing compared to the frenzy at the end of the season where he was linked with moves to Real Madrid, AC Milan and Barcelona after winning his sixth League title with United.

That infamous “boot incident” seemed to be the final straw with Beckham and ManU. It ultimately lead to one of the most high profile transfers is soccer history. The transfer of David Beckham to Real Madrid made international headlines. The signing on 17/6/03 was televised in more than 100 countries.

The record £25m switch raised as many questions and is did answers. Many in the soccer world felt that the move was simply for “personality reasons”, and that Beckham was “to slow” for such a high level of football. The critics were silenced when Beckham scored 2 minutes into his Real Madrid debut. Beckham is now joined with some of the most potent football talent in the world. Ronaldo, Raul, Zinedine Zidane and Beckham will all be on the field at the same time! Needless to say, Real Madrid will be a very tough team for a while!

New Barclays Premier League rules mean every top-flight club has to declare a senior squad of up to 25 players from which they can select players between now and the re-opening of the transfer window in January.

Players who are under 21 at the turn of 2011 can play without being named in the squads.

Eight of the 25 need to be 'homegrown', which means they must have been trained in England or Wales for three seasons before they turned 21.

The Smackdown brand took a major blow on Friday night as Edge suffered what is believed to be a torn Achilles tendon during a house show match in San Diego, CA. If that is indeed what the injury is, it's expected to keep him on the shelf for the rest of the year and will force the WWE to change their plans for both Edge and Chris Jericho, his partner as Unified Tag Team Champions. There's obviously no plans in place at this time for them to be able to figure out what to do since the injury just happened this weekend, but from reports it looks like they're trying to find something from the footage on this past Friday's Smackdown show to explain the injury. Expect to see either Legacy or The Colons pick up the straps from Jericho soon after the announcement is made on television, or perhaps for the belts to be vacated with Legacy and The Colons fighting it out for the titles.

As I said previously this is a terrible blow to Smackdown as Edge has been one of the best performers of the year and was easily in the running to be considered as an MVP of sorts for the entire company. Since being elevated to the top of the card, he's put on great matches, had consistently solid feuds and been one of the most watchable characters no matter what brand he was on. Edge had gone through a good run of being injury-free as of late, but there is word going around that he was working around some nagging injuries which could have led to him injuring himself further. As much as that can be the case in some cases, when it's an Achilles rupture it just goes with no real warning and can happen just as easily to someone who is completely healthy as it can to someone with pre-existing injuries.
